Out Today! Maiden England Live DVD

Monday, March 25th, 2013

That’s right folks! Iron Maiden have just released their awaited Maiden England 88, a new, remastered, bonus-filled edition of their classic 1989 VHS original.

Filmed across two sold-out nights at Birmingham N.E.C Arena, UK back in November 1988 during the band’s “Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son World Tour”, the concert film has been a missing piece of the Iron Maiden catalog for a long time. It has been painstakingly edited by bassist Steve Harris and promises to be a real must-have for all us Maiden fans out there.

So what’s in it??

Disc one contains the concert itself, which has been upgraded and extended from the existing and now includes three previously unreleased encores: Running Free, Run To The Hills and Sanctuary.
Disc two features a bonus documentary that includes interviews with Maiden and their manager, Rod Smallwood, as well as a bonus documentary, Twelve Wasted Years, and five promo videos. What a dream!
Not only that, tt’s also packed with interviews, exclusive live footage and more!

The band also published this on their Facebook Page:

“We’ve been busy upgrading this concert footage for a long time, with our in-house Film Producer and Director Andy Matthews working tirelessly to weave his magic yet again!,” says Rod. “The 1989 VHS video has been largely unavailable for many years and we know how eagerly our fans have been awaiting the new version so we wanted to give it the best possible treatment. The current Maiden England World Tour which continues later this year revisits much of the set list and production from the initial 1989 VHS release so it will be interesting to compare just how much has changed in terms of our 2013 live show production, especially with all the advances in modern technology and the improvements we’ve been able to make to the set”.

So what are you waiting for? Go grab a copy! :)

The Greatest Heavy Metal Albums EVER – Results!

Sunday, September 23rd, 2012

10. Metallica – ‘Ride the Lightning’
Metallica’s second LP proved to the world they weren’t just a flash in the pan. Coming a few years before Metallica gained real mainstream popularity, Ride the Lightning was a crucial step forward in their evolution.

9. Led Zeppelin – ‘Led Zeppelin II’
Led Zeppelin‘s second album was recorded during the group’s first year on the road. It’s the sound of a band coming together as a unit and developing their own style. On days off they’d set up shop at a local studio, and then pack everything up and start again when they had time. It’s a very tough way to make an album, yet the disc sounds totally cohesive.

8. Metallica – ‘Metallica’ (The Black Album)
Few in the industry (or even the band) could have imagined just how popular Metallica would become. “Enter Sandman” went into heavy rotation on MTV, and suddenly it was no longer just the metal kids at school blasting Metallica in the car parks.

7. Guns N’ Roses – ‘Appetite for Destruction’
There’s no doubt that Guns N Roses‘ Appetite for Destruction is one of the greatest debut albums in rock history. There’s no doubt people will still be listening to “Welcome to the Jungle” and “Sweet Child o’ Mine” in 100 years. The album is so perfect it should be on as many “all time greatest” lists as it possibly can.

6. Slayer – ‘Reign In Blood’
Reign In Blood sold a huge amount of records back in 1986, and it established Slayer as giants in the world of metal. Three decades later they have yet to slow down or compromise in any way.

5. Metallica – ‘. . . And Justice for All’
This was their first time cutting a new album since the tragic death of bassist Cliff Burton in 1986, and the first time they were open to the idea of promoting an album with a music video. The songs on the album are all extremely long; many have been rarely played in the past decade.

4. Iron Maiden – ‘The Number of the Beast’
Iron Maiden‘s third disc, The Number of the Beast, is where the group found their voice. Literally. Before they began recording the 1982 classic, they booted singer Paul Di’Anno in favor of Bruce Dickinson. The group only grew in popularity from here, but they never quite reached this level of sheer perfection.

3. Black Sabbath – ‘Black Sabbath’
Black Sabbath‘s 1969 debut LP is the Big Bang of heavy metal. It’s impossible to imagine how the genre would have evolved without it! The disc was recorded in a single day at a London studio, and in stores just three months later. Much to their surprise, it found a huge audience.

2. Black Sabbath – ‘Paranoid’
Just a few months after the release of their self-titled debut, Black Sabbath went back into the studio to begin their second LP. This time around they had an even more stunning arsenal of songs, including “War Pigs,” “Paranoid,” “Iron Man” and “Fairies Wear Boots.” The song ‘Paranoid’ only reached Number 61 on the Billboard Hot 100, but it’s been played on the radio about ten billion times since, and in many ways has become their signature song. No matter how much success they had after Paranoid, the songs on this disc have always been at the center of their live set list.

1. Metallica – ‘Master of Puppets’

Metallica‘s 1986 LP Master of Puppets blew the competition completely out of the water. It’s no big surprise. The disc captured Metallica at the height of their powers. Though it’s amonumental disc, it took a few years for critics to fully appreciate it. Metallica played the album straight through on a European tour in 2006 to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

Array of Rock Legends to Appear on Deep Purple Tribute

Friday, August 10th, 2012

Rock metal giants Metallica, Iron Maiden and The Flaming Lips have all signed up to contribute tracks to a new Deep Purple tribute album!

Titled ‘Re-Machined: A Tribute to Machine Head’, this album will pay homage to Deep Purples sixth studio album ‘Machine Head’ and will feature a dream team of artists and bands. This classic album originally reached the number 1 spot in the United Kingdom (#7 US)  and stayed in the top 40 for a whopping 20 weeks!

Inspired by real-life events in Montreux, Switzerland, Deep Purple were recording the album when the Montreux Casino was burned to the ground during a Frank Zappa concert! Containing some of the best rock riffs known to man (such as Smoke On The Water) as well as some of the best vocals of a generation from frontman Ian Gillan, its little wonder how a tribute recording can pull in such big names!

As well as this, a series of one-off collaborators will join forces to record some of the tracks. Some of the names set to take part include the likes of Red Hot Chili Peppers’ stickman Chad Smith, ex-Guns N’ Roses men Matt Sorum and Duff MacKagan, Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott and Steve Vai. Amazing of what!

Check out the full tracklist below and see just who will be playing what:

Carlos Santana – ‘Smoke On The Water’
Chickenfoot – ‘Highway Star’
Glenn Hughes, Chad Smith and Luis Maldonado – ‘Maybe I’m A Leo’
Black Label Society – ‘Pictures Of Home’
Kings of Chaos (Joe Elliott, Steve Stevens, Duff McKagan, Matt Sorum, Arlan Schierbaum) – ‘Never Before’
The Flaming Lips – ‘Smoke On The Water’
Jimmy Barnes, Joe Bonamassa – ‘Lazy’
Iron Maiden – ‘Space Truckin”
Metallica – ‘When A Blind Man Cries’
Glenn Hughes, Steve Vai, Chad Smith, Lachlan Doley – ‘Highway Star’

This will be available on September 4, 2012 through Classic Rock Magazine as part of a special “fan-pack.”

Iron Maiden Record Crowned ‘Best British Album of the Past 60 Years’!

Tuesday, May 29th, 2012

That’s right folks! A chart topping release by classic heavy rockers Iron Maiden has been named the greatest album of the past 60 years!

How about that huh! Thinking back to what the land of music has given us over such a long period of time, it really does make you think just how amazing this title is. With a serious amount of truly amazing albums blasted our way over that time and to come out on top is mind-blowing.

Conducted by HMV, this huge music survey collected over 55,000 votes in all and a whopping 9.2% of all those people voted for Iron Maiden‘s 1982 hit album ‘The Number of the Beast’ as their top pick. Well who can blame them!?

This amazing album has sold over 14 million copies since it’s release and has given us some of the most loved rock songs ever including Run To The Hills, The Number of the Beast, and Hallowed Be Thy Name. This was the bands third album and shot them even further into the spotlight of rock.

On being told of the award, lead singer and pilot Bruce Dickinson said:

“We’re astonished and delighted to hear The Number of the Beast has been named No.1 in HMV’s Diamond Jubilee survey for the greatest British album category. Some of the most influential and classic albums from the past 60 years were in the running so it’s a testament to our incredibly loyal and ever-supportive fans who voted for us.”

This fantastic poll also showed huge support for a number of The Beatles albums with Abbey Road, Revolver, and The White Album all in the top ten. Pink Floyd‘s Dark Side of the Moon reached the number five slot and Queen‘s A Night at the Opera came in at number 8.

Check out the complete top ten run down below:

1. Iron Maiden – The Number of the Beast
2. Depeche Mode – Violator
3. The Beatles – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
4. The Beatles – Abbey Road
5. Pink Floyd – The Dark Side of the Moon
6. The Beatles – Revolver
7. Queen – A Night at the Opera
8. Oasis – (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?
9. Adele – 21
10. The Beatles – White Album

No real surprises in our eyes but we cant help but feel that there are some huge names missing from the list. What do you think? What album would you vote for? Let us know with a comment below.
